Assessment
The Emotional and Social Competency Inventory (ESCI)
Emotional and social intelligence, rated by the people around a leader as well as by the leader themselves.
What it is
The Emotional and Social Competency Inventory (ESCI) is a 360-degree assessment for leadership development, designed to build the emotional and social intelligence competencies that effective leadership depends on.
Developed by Daniel Goleman and Richard Boyatzis, the ESCI draws on feedback from several sources, peers, direct reports, supervisors and the leader themselves, to give a well-rounded view of a leader’s emotional intelligence (EQ).

What it gives a leader
-
Self-awareness for authentic leadership
The ESCI gathers feedback from diverse perspectives on how a leader recognizes and manages their emotions.
-
Self-management and emotional regulation
Feedback from colleagues and direct reports shows how a leader manages and regulates their emotional responses, especially under pressure, and gives them a realistic view of their composure.
-
Social awareness and empathy
Through the 360 feedback process, the ESCI shows how well a leader empathizes and recognizes the emotions of others, and where the strengths and the blind spots are.
-
Relationship management and influence
The 360 feedback shows how effectively a leader uses emotional intelligence to influence others and resolve conflict, and makes clear where their relational impact can improve.
-
Team collaboration and adaptability
The 360 approach shows how a leader’s behavior affects teamwork and cooperation, and how they build collaborative environments.
The 360-degree structure of the ESCI makes it an invaluable tool for cultivating emotionally intelligent leaders. A leader receives comprehensive, actionable insight from the people around them, and develops the self-awareness, empathy and resilience that inspire trust, drive team success and prepare them for the evolving demands of modern leadership.
